Haircare Packaging Guide for Brands: Bottles, Pumps, Tubes, Jars, Droppers, Salon Packs and PCR

Haircare packaging should be chosen around the product's viscosity, how it is used in the shower and how far it will travel. Bottles and pumps suit shampoos and conditioners, jars and tubes suit masks, and droppers suit oils and serums. Compatibility testing between formula and pack matters as much as the look.
The right haircare packaging is chosen by product viscosity, use in the shower and transit distance, not by looks alone. Shampoos and conditioners suit bottles with flip-tops, disc caps or pumps; masks suit jars or tubes; oils and serums suit droppers or fine pumps; salons need 1 L and 5 L packs. Every pack should be tested with its formula before production.
Packaging is often the largest single decision in a haircare launch after the formula itself. It shapes shelf presence, marketplace photography, the in-shower experience, transit damage rates and much of the unit cost. This guide sets out the main options for brands working with a haircare manufacturer in India, and the trade-offs behind each.
Start with the product, not the pack
Three questions narrow the choice quickly:
- How thick is the product? Watery tonics, pourable shampoos, thick masks and oils each dispense differently.
- How and where is it used? With wet, slippery hands in the shower; at a dressing table; or by a stylist at a salon basin.
- How far will it travel? Marketplace and export shipments face more handling, pressure and temperature change than local retail.
Matching packs to haircare products
| Product | Common packs | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shampoo | Bottle with flip-top or disc cap; pump bottle | Easy one-handed dispensing with wet hands |
| Conditioner | Bottle with flip-top; tube; pump | Thicker product needs a wider orifice or squeezable body |
| Hair mask | Jar; wide tube | Too thick to pour; jar supports a treatment ritual |
| Hair oil | Bottle with flip-top or nozzle; dropper; pump | Controlled dosing; oil-compatible materials |
| Hair serum and tonic | Dropper; fine pump; spray | Small, precise doses; direct-to-scalp application |
| Hair spray and leave-in mist | Fine-mist sprayer; trigger | Even distribution over hair |
| Salon back-bar | 1 L bottle with pump; 5 L can | Cost-efficient dispensing and decanting |

Bottles and closures
Bottles are the workhorse of haircare. Common plastics include HDPE, which is sturdy and opaque, and PET, which is clear and glossy. The closure changes the experience as much as the bottle does.
- Flip-top caps: familiar and economical; check that the hinge survives repeated use.
- Disc caps: neat, press-to-open, suited to premium shelves.
- Screw caps with orifice reducers: useful for oils.
- Nozzles and comb applicators: for direct-to-scalp oils.

Pumps
Pumps give a premium feel and controlled dose, and are standard for salon litre bottles. Match the pump to the formula: output per stroke, the viscosity it can handle and whether it locks for transit. A thick conditioner can defeat a lotion pump designed for thinner products, while an oil may need a pump with suitable seals. For transit, choose a lock-down or clip-locked pump, or ship with a separate cap. Explore options in our pump packaging collection.
Tubes
Squeeze tubes suit conditioners, masks, leave-in creams and styling products. They are light, travel well and let customers use almost all of the product. Laminated tubes give a sleek printed finish, while extruded plastic tubes are common for everyday products. Consider the cap: flip-top for wet-hand use, screw cap for occasional treatments. Browse tube options.
Jars
Jars suit rich masks and butters, and the wide opening invites a slow, indulgent treatment. Plastic jars are lighter and safer in the shower; heavier jars feel more premium on a dressing table. Include an inner liner or seal for transit, and consider a spatula for hygiene with premium masks.
Droppers for oils and serums
Droppers signal precision and suit scalp serums, tonics and premium oils. Glass is common for its premium feel and compatibility with oils; amber or frosted glass also helps protect light-sensitive formulas. Check the dose per drop and the length of the pipette relative to the bottle, and plan protective secondary packaging for glass in transit. See our dropper packaging.
Salon packs, bulk and refills
Salons and spas typically want 1 L bottles with pumps at the basin and 5 L packs for refilling. These packs reduce cost per use and packaging waste. Retail brands can borrow the same idea through refill pouches or larger "refill" bottles that customers decant into an original pack. Recycled content (PCR) and sustainability
Post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic is increasingly requested by retailers and customers. Points to consider:
- Appearance: PCR material can show slight tint, specks or variation; clear PCR may look less sparkling than virgin plastic.
- Availability: specific colours, finishes and PCR proportions can affect lead times and minimums.
- Claims: state recycled content accurately and only where the supplier can document it.
- Design for recycling: mono-material packs, removable labels and fewer mixed components can help.
- Weight: lighter packs reduce material use but must still survive transit.
Decoration and labelling
Decoration options include printed self-adhesive labels, shrink sleeves and direct printing such as screen printing. Labels must be waterproof enough for the shower and resistant to the product itself, especially for oils. Make sure the label area is large enough for mandatory information: product name, ingredient list, net quantity, batch and dates, manufacturer details and any warnings. Export markets may add language, allergen and responsible-person requirements.
Compatibility and transit testing
A beautiful pack is a failure if it leaks, panels or reacts with the formula. Before production, check:
- Compatibility between formula and pack materials over time.
- Seal integrity and leak resistance, including under pressure and temperature change.
- Pump and closure function across the life of the product.
- Label adhesion when wet or exposed to the product.
Secondary packaging and marketplace readiness
The outer carton, shrink wrap or mailer matters as much as the primary pack once products leave the factory. Marketplaces and fulfilment centres often have their own rules on barcodes, outer-carton labelling, leak-proofing for liquids and the drop resistance of glass. Gift boxes and sleeves add shelf appeal but also cost, storage space and another component with its own lead time. Decide early whether each product ships naked, in a carton or in a protective sleeve, and check that the full stack of primary pack, cap, seal, carton and shipper has been tested together rather than piece by piece.

Frequently asked questions
What packaging is best for a hair mask?
Jars and wide squeeze tubes suit most masks, because thick textures do not pour. A jar supports a treatment ritual, while a tube is more hygienic and travel-friendly.
Can oils be packed in plastic bottles?
Many oils can, but compatibility between the oil blend and the plastic must be checked over time. Glass droppers are common for premium oils and serums.
Do you offer salon 1 L and 5 L packs?
Yes. Shampoos, conditioners, masks and other haircare products can be supplied in 1 L and 5 L salon packs alongside retail sizes.
Can I use recycled (PCR) plastic?
PCR options can be explored for many components. Appearance, availability and minimums vary, and recycled-content claims should only be made where supplier documentation supports them.
