Private Label Massage Oil Manufacturer in India: Process, MOQ and Timelines

Private label massage oil manufacturing lets a brand sell a finished, tested oil under its own name without owning a factory. Starting from a ready formula is the fastest route, with MOQs from 500 units per product; custom formulas, fragrance and packaging add development and approval steps. The schedule is driven mainly by sampling rounds, packaging lead times and regulatory paperwork in the destination market.
A private label massage oil manufacturer in India develops, fills, labels and ships a finished oil under your brand, so you can launch without building a factory. With a ready formula you can start from 500 units per product; custom blends, fragrance and packaging add development and approval steps that shape the overall timeline.
Spa groups, salon chains, hotels, Ayurveda labels and direct-to-consumer founders all reach the same question sooner or later: is it better to formulate in-house or to work with a massage oil manufacturer in India that already has the licences, equipment and supply chain? For most brands, private label is the practical answer. This guide explains how the process works, what minimum order quantities look like and which decisions actually set the pace of a launch.
What private label massage oil manufacturing means
Private label (sometimes called white label or third-party manufacturing) means the manufacturer produces the oil and you own the brand. The product carries your name, artwork and positioning; the manufacturer handles raw-material sourcing, blending, quality control, filling and packing. There are two common starting points.
Ready formulas
A ready formula is an existing, stable blend that has already been made at scale. At Harrods Health our current range includes relaxing massage oil, a lemongrass and lavender massage oil, a radiance body massage oil, aromatic body oil mists and body oils. You can browse examples in our massage oil collection. Choosing a ready base and adjusting the fragrance, colour or pack is the fastest way to market because the formula's behaviour on the filling line is already known.
Custom formulas
A custom formula starts from your brief: the carrier oils you want, the skin feel, a signature scent, a herbal infusion or a particular claim you hope to make. This route gives more differentiation but needs more development, sampling and stability work. Our custom formulation service covers this path, from the first lab sample to a scaled batch.
The private label process, step by step
- Brief. Share your target customer, channel (retail, spa back-bar, hotel room, marketplace), destination countries, preferred carriers, fragrance direction, pack size and target cost. The clearer the brief, the fewer sample rounds you need.
- Samples. You receive samples before any order is placed. Test them on real users: therapists for glide and workability, retail customers for scent and finish.
- Feedback and refinement. Adjust viscosity, absorption, fragrance strength or colour. Each round should change one or two variables so you can judge the effect.
- Packaging selection. Choose bottle material, closure (pump, flip-top, dropper, roll-on) and decoration. Packaging compatibility with oil matters more than many brands expect.
- Artwork and labelling. Your design team supplies artwork; ingredient lists, warnings and regulatory text are reviewed for the markets you plan to sell in.
- Pre-production approval. You sign off a final sample and a packed reference unit. This becomes the standard each batch is checked against.
- Production and quality control. Blending, filling, capping, labelling and batch testing take place in our GMP-compliant facility.
- Documentation and dispatch. Certificates of analysis, packing lists and export paperwork are prepared, and goods are shipped to your warehouse, a marketplace fulfilment centre or an export port.
Throughout this, a single account manager is your point of contact, which avoids the common problem of chasing separate teams for formulation, packaging and logistics.

Minimum order quantities explained
Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest run that makes sense for blending vessels, filling lines and packaging suppliers. For our ready formulas the MOQ starts at 500 units per product. A few points help when planning:
- MOQ is per product, per variant. Three fragrances in two sizes are six separate runs, each with its own minimum.
- Packaging can carry its own minimum. Stock bottles and caps are usually flexible; custom-moulded or custom-coloured components often need larger quantities from the component supplier.
- Bulk professional packs such as 5 L containers for spas are calculated differently, since one unit holds far more oil.
- Custom formulas may need a larger first batch than ready formulas so that the blend can be validated at production scale.
Our MOQ and pricing page sets out how quantities and quotes are structured. We do not publish a single price list because cost depends on oil selection, fragrance load, pack and decoration.
What drives your timeline
Rather than quoting a generic number of weeks that may not apply to your project, it is more useful to understand which steps take time and which ones you control.
| Stage | What sets the pace | How to speed it up |
|---|---|---|
| Sampling | Number of revision rounds | Give a detailed brief and reference products you like |
| Custom fragrance | Fragrance development and evaluation | Start from an existing scent family, then tweak |
| Packaging | Component availability and custom decoration | Use stock bottles with a printed label for launch |
| Artwork | Internal design approvals and regulatory review | Confirm destination markets before artwork begins |
| Stability checks | Time needed to observe the product under storage conditions | Choose a ready formula with existing data |
| Export paperwork | Destination-market registration and documents | Appoint any required local representative early |
At quotation stage we give you a written schedule for your specific project, based on the formula, pack and destination you have chosen.
Choosing packaging that works with oil
Oils can soften some plastics, creep past poorly fitting closures and leave labels greasy if the label material is wrong. Glass and suitable grades of PET are common choices; pumps and flip-tops must seal properly to avoid leaks during transport. Our custom packaging service covers bottle selection, closures, label stock, cartons and gift boxes. If you prefer to source decorated packs yourself, ask how your components will be tested for compatibility before filling.
Claims, safety and paperwork
Massage oils sold as cosmetics should carry cosmetic claims: the oil moisturises, softens the skin, glides smoothly and helps skin feel relaxed. Medicinal claims about treating conditions belong to a different regulatory category and should be avoided on a cosmetic product. Formulas are dermatologically tested, and test reports are available on request so that your safety assessor or importer can review them.
Our facility holds the following: ISO certified, GMP-compliant facility, Halal certified, AYUSH licence, US FDA registered facility, and a state FDA cosmetic manufacturing licence. These cover manufacturing; registering or notifying the product in each destination market is a separate step, often handled with your importer or a local representative.
How to brief a private label manufacturer well
- Describe who uses the oil and where: a therapist working a 60-minute treatment needs a different glide from a consumer applying oil after a shower.
- List your non-negotiables, such as a specific carrier, a fragrance-free option or a vegan formula.
- State your destination markets so labelling and allergen declarations are handled from the start.
- Share a target retail or treatment cost so the formula and pack can be matched to it.
- Agree how you will judge samples and who signs off.
If you are still choosing a base, our guide to carrier oils for massage oils compares texture, absorption and shelf life across the most common options.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for private label massage oil?
For our ready formulas the minimum order starts at 500 units per product. Custom formulas, custom fragrances or custom-moulded packaging can need larger first runs, and each variant (scent or size) counts as a separate product.
Can I get samples before placing an order?
Yes. Samples are provided before any order so you can test glide, absorption and scent with therapists or customers, then request refinements before approving a final standard.
Can you add my own fragrance and colour?
Yes. Fragrance, colour and packaging can be customised on ready formulas, and fully custom formulas can be developed from your brief. Fragrance changes should be reviewed for allergens and destination-market rules.
Do you ship directly to my warehouse or marketplace?
Yes. We handle packing, documents and dispatch to warehouses, marketplace fulfilment centres or export ports, coordinated by a single account manager.
