A seasonal, island-led market

Greece's hotel market is shaped by the islands. Many properties are family-owned resorts, boutique hotels and villa complexes that open from spring to autumn and close in winter, while Athens and Thessaloniki trade year-round. Season timing drives everything: stock must arrive, clear customs and reach the island before opening, and storage space is often tight.

Property type Formats often chosen Planning point
Island resorts Wall dispensers, 5 L refills Order before opening; limited storage
Boutique and design hotels Decorated counter dispensers, signature scent Strong visual identity
Villas and suites Larger dispensers, body lotion, hand wash Longer stays, families
Athens and city hotels Dispensers or tubes Year-round demand

Who buys

Owners and general managers often make the decision themselves, buying direct or through distributors based in Athens. Small groups that run several island properties may consolidate one order for the season. MOQs are quoted per item, so a small group can order one range in a single scent.

Scents of the landscape

Greek properties often want scents that feel local: olive, fig leaf, wild thyme, sage, lemon, bergamot, jasmine and sea-fresh notes. Lightweight body lotion suits hot, dry summers and guests who spend their days outdoors. We can develop a signature scent and keep it consistent between seasons. Formulas can be supplied as dermatologically tested, with reports on request.

EU rules and Greek labels

Hotel toiletries are cosmetics under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. An EU-based Responsible Person must hold a Product Information File, including the Cosmetic Product Safety Report, and notify each product on the CPNP before supply. Mandatory label information is expected in Greek; English is commonly added because so many guests are international.

Harrods Health is not a Responsible Person. The hotel group, importer, distributor or a service provider takes on that role. We supply the INCI ingredient list, formula information and manufacturing documentation they need.

Packaging, waste and the sea

The EU's PPWR restricts single-use plastic packaging for small toiletry portions in hospitality from 2030. Check the final thresholds and any national or local rules that may go further. On islands, waste has to be shipped off or handled locally, so dispensers and 5 L refills reduce both plastic and handling. Our custom packaging team makes and decorates dispensers in-house.

Coastal properties increasingly ask about rinse-off products that go into the sea via showers and wastewater. The REACH restriction on intentionally added microplastics applies, with transition periods for rinse-off cosmetics, and we can formulate without intentionally added microplastics. Keep claims precise: EU rules on generic environmental claims are tightening, so avoid words like "ocean-safe" unless you can prove them. The EU Ecolabel for rinse-off cosmetics is an option some hotels explore; we do not hold it.

Shipping to Greece

Orders usually go by sea to the main port serving Athens, at Piraeus, or to Thessaloniki for the north, then by truck and ferry to the islands. Allow extra time for island delivery, especially in the weeks just before the season, when ferries and hauliers are busy. The importer of record clears goods using an EU EORI number, and your Incoterm decides who pays freight, insurance and duty. Pallet sizes may need to suit ferry and island-road handling. See fulfilment and export.

Planning the season backwards

For island hotels, the easiest way to plan is to work back from opening day. Allow time for ferry delivery and unpacking, customs clearance, sea freight, production, artwork approval in Greek and English, and the Responsible Person's safety assessment and CPNP notification. Many owners finalise the next season's range in the winter, while the hotel is closed and there is time to test samples.
